Asian Tour Recap: Bjorn Hellgren Breaks Through in 2025’s Final Event
Bjorn Hellgren claims his first Asian Tour victory at the Saudi Open after five years of near-misses. Plus, Kazuki Higa makes history as Japan's first Asian Tour Order of Merit champion.
A weight off of his shoulders. The 35 year-old Bjorn Hellgren has had a spattering of near-misses since his first start on the Asian Tour five seasons ago. He’d been the leader entering the final round more than once but was never able to get across the line.
“I mean, finally. I’m not gonna say I was doubting myself, but I’ve been leading tournaments before in this past five years, and never got it done before. I couldn’t have done it without Graham, my caddie. He kept me calm and present for especially today. So, I’m very proud of myself, my team, and especially my family that keep pushing me.”
He’d battled all four rounds with the same playing partner, Jack Thompson. The pair entered the final round in a tie for the lead at -18, with Charles Porter two thots back at -16. Despite three consecutive birdies early in the round from Thompson, the two were still tied as they made the turn to the back. After a missed putt on 10 Bjorn would have the solo lead, though it came down to the very last putt. Thompson nearly holed a 30 footer for eagle on the 18th, but the miss and easy birdie meant that Hellgren would have to sink a 6 footer for birdie to get his first win. He did just that.
Thompson, though disappointed with the second place finish, secures his Asian Tour card for the 2026 season. He’d entered the week in 62nd on the Order of Merit meaning he was just barely on the outside looking in.
“So yeah, I mean, at the end of that, I can’t really complain. I think if you told me I’d finished second at the start of the week before, when I needed to keep my card, I would have been pretty happy. But we obviously want more. Always want more.”
Asian Tour Order of Merit Results
Kazuki Higa becomes the first ever Japanese player to win the season long race on the Asian Tour. With this result, Higa earns a place in the 2026 Open Championship. Amazingly, Higa has played in tournaments the last 18 weeks. After a season of hard work he’s earned some time off before the start of the 2026 season.
“I have worked very hard for this. I felt that last year changed things, all the hard work started to pay off and it’s amazing to see it all pay off this week”
Higa finished in seventh place at the Saudi Open, securing his spot over Scott Vincent. Though Vincent won’t be awarded with a spot in the Open Championship, he’ll be plenty pleased with his season as he finished as the International Series Order of Merit leader and earned his spot back on LIV Golf for next season.
Poosit Supupramai claims his maiden Asian Tour victory at the Bharath Classic 2025, securing his card for next season. Preview the Saudi Open finale and Order of Merit battles.
Josele Ballester wins the 2025 PIF Saudi International at -22, while Scott Vincent and Yosuke Asaji secure LIV Golf exemptions through the International Series Order of Merit.
Ekpharit Wu wins his first Asian Tour event at the Taifong Open, earning a spot in the PIF Saudi International where two LIV Golf promotions will be decided.
