Xander Schauffele claims his first major at Valhalla!
The majors never seem to disappoint. Every day was as captivating as the last. Thursday began with Xander shooting a course record of 62 and putting himself 3 shots clear of the field.
Friday was interesting in a completely different way. Scottie Scheffler was arrested when attempting to skirt some traffic and get into the venue (as he was told to do by PGA Officials). In the span of a couple of hours he had been handcuffed, changed into an orange jumpsuit, had his mugshot taken, stretched in a jail cell, and got back to the course and out to the driving range. Incredibly he shot five under after all of that.
On Saturday, Xander’s new course record as tied by Shane Lowry and the leaderboard tightened up as the final round approached.
After the first 10 holes of the day on Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau found imself tied for the lead with Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland. He’d go on to make three more birdies and post a bogey free 64, finishing at -20. Twenty under par was a tie for the lowest score ever recorded in a major, for about 20 minutes.
Xander entered the last hole, a par 5, tied for the lead. A shaky drive, great recovery, great pitch, and 5 foot putt later, he’d finish at -21. Not only his first major championship, a new major scoring record.
Congratulations to Xander Schauffele!
Sink it, soak it in.
