Scottie charges and claims gold - Rahm let’s medals slip away on back 9.
Scottie started the day well back of the lead on Sunday in Paris but birdies on his first three holes got him right back in striking distance. Things calmed down for the remainder of the front nine for him, as Jon Rahm opened with a 31 to give himself a three shot lead over the field with 9 holes to go.
A birdie on 10 extended that lead to 4 for Rahm. He’d then three putt the 11th for bogey, and hit a wayward drive on 12 that led to another. That’d be the story for the remainder of the round for Rahm as he closed with a 39, dropping out of medal position.
For a time it looked like no one was going to be able to catch him, as he his -20, but with his struggles on the back the tournament was once again wide open.
That’s exactly when Scottie Scheffler rounded into the form we’ve seen him in for much of this year. He’d make birdie on 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17 to get to -19 and claim the gold medal in an incredibly impressive come from behind victory where he tied the course record. He shot 67-69-67-62 and won by one stroke.
Claiming the silver medal was Tommy Fleetwood with a steady 67-64-69-66, and with bronze was Hideki Matsuyama posting 63-68-71-65.
Congratulations to all of the medal winners in Paris!
