Maverick McNealy get his first PGA Tour victory at The RSM Classic!
As Maverick McNealy stood on the 18th tee, he knew what he needed to do. Luke Clanton, who has had a breakout year making seven of eight cuts on tour this year as an amateur, had the clubhouse lead at -15.
Nico Echavarria held the lead overall at -16, but the 18th hole was playing as one of the hardest on the course. McNealy could all but guarantee a birdie would at least get him into a playoff with Echavarria. His drive left him a 6 iron in from 185 yards, which he’d stick about 5 feet away from the hole. Prior to this shot, he watched Nico putmiss the green long left, leaving him a tough up and down to save the par.
Nico would hit his chip to about 9 feet, and miss the par putt. Daniel Berger would also miss a birdie putt that would have put even more pressure on McNealy.
That left McNealy a 5 footer for birdie, and the outright win. He’d sink it.
In his 134th start as a professional, Maverick McNealy becomes a PGA Tour winner.
Congratulations Maverick McNealy!
This week on the PGA Tour:
No event on the PGA Tour this week, but they’ll return next week for the Hero World Challenge in Albany, where Scottie Scheffler will look to defend last year’s title!
Asian Tour
Patrick Reed posts the second 59 in Asian Tour history - wins the Hong Kong Open!
After opening rounds of 65-68 Patrick Reed found himself tied for 11th at the Hong Kong Open, five shots back of Ben Campbell.
Then he’d open his third round with five straight birdies, make a par, and then a sixth birdie. An opening nine holes that only took him 28 shots.
Then after a streak of pars, he’d finish the round similar to how he started it. Five more birdies in the last six holes, for a 59. Four shots better than anybody else in the tournament in the third round, giving himself a three shot lead heading into the final round. The final round was comfortable for Reed, as his steady play continued and he was able to keep the field at arms length with another strong round of 66. He’d win by three shots over Ben Campbell and step into the winner’s circle for the first time since 2021.
Congratulations to Patrick Reed!
